Description
Your guide will meet you at your hotel for a fully private sightseeing experience. Jewish presence in Gdansk dates back to the 10th century. As a vital seaport, Gdansk developed economically and culturally, attracting Jewish merchants who contributed to trade, industry, and crafts.
By the 15th and 16th centuries, Gdansk was the most densely populated and prosperous city in Poland. In the late 19th century, the Jewish community built the city’s largest synagogue, symbolizing unity before its destruction by the Germans in 1939.
During the tour, you will walk through the Old Town to see significant Jewish sites, including the location of the Great Synagogue, the former Jewish ghetto area on Granary Island, and the Kindertransports monument. Learn about the famous Jewish Theatre in Gdansk and the history of the Kindertransports. The tour ends at the only remaining synagogue in Gdansk, the New Synagogue in Wrzeszcz, built in 1926.
Returning to your hotel, your guide will offer recommendations for further exploration of Jewish heritage sites on your own.
