A must-see when in Gdansk, a historic monument as a reminder of the beginning of the WW2. A popular place for tourists/families especially on weekends. Due to the very special interconnection of the islands (or actually the lack of), the monument can be difficult (time consuming) to reach. There are also neither zabkas nor restaurants nor cafes, only a tiny snack/drinks-booth. Most of the area cannot be explored freely, but the monument itself is publicly accessible.

This is a historic site for Poland. It was here that World War II began on September 1, 1939. The peninsula is home to a museum and several monuments dedicated to the Polish defenders who fell in that unequal battle. If you're a history buff, this place is a must-see. You can get there by sightseeing boat, which departs from the pier in the Old Town. As of June 8, 2026, a round-trip ticket costs 100 zl.

I didn't know about Westerplatte before coming to Gdansk, but I'm glad I found out and got a chance to visit it. This is an very significant historical place, where the first shots of World War II were fired. The open air museum tells the story of the beginning of the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, and the memorial commemorates the Polish soldiers who opposed and held out on Westerplatte peninsula against overwhelming odds.

Nigdy więcej wojny" (Never Again War). 🕊️ Visited the solemn and historic Westerplatte peninsula in Gdańsk. Looking at the majestic Monument to the Defenders of the Coast you can truly feel the weight of history. It's a place where a tragic past meets a beautiful, peaceful present. ⚓️✨

Extremely important memorial site for the beginning of the world war 2. Its a place where you can feel the horrors of the beginning on the invasion of Poland. I recommend visiting this site since it reminds us not to repeat our terrible past. Its not easy to get there by car, further down the road like 1.5 kilometers there are parking by the museum where you can walk to the site by foot. Otherwise you can choose to park illegally by the road closer to the site.
